September is here in all its wonderful glory - the cooler weather (at least for now!), the beginnings of leaves changing & our favorite - the arrival of mums!
Mums are a Fall season staple in your containers & landscapes, just as much as football season is to your favorite team. Learning just a few simple tips will help maximize the quality, longevity & impact of this beautiful bloom.
Buy ‘em as they break bud…
Unless you are looking for immediate impact, we recommend choosing a mum that is still in ‘bud’ form - you’ll maximize the bloom time. By being a little patient, the mum will soon bloom out into it’s famous Fall color & you will have a dramatic showing of color soon enough.
Less is more…
When you are looking to make a colorful impact in your yard this Fall, we recommend going with a simple color scheme - stay with 2-3 colors of mums, max. Depending on the size & scale of space you’re working with, mums are always prettier when massed out in just 2-3 colors. Resist the urge to go overboard with several colors. Not sure what color would look best in your yard? Just ask us & we’ll be happy to help you decide!
Bigger is better…
If you are looking for maximum color impact, buy the bigger plant. Once the buds open, you’ll have beautiful Fall color - if you choose the bigger sized mum, you’ll certainly have a firework-show of color no matter where it’s displayed. Come check out our size selections ranging from 8″, 10″ & 14″ pots!
Keep ‘em coming…
In order to keep your mums happy & blooming, keep the soil moist, but not overly wet. A good guideline is to check the moisture level daily during warm weather, and every other day during cool weather. Don’t forget to remove spent blooms - this will encourage the plant to produce more blooms during it’s lifetime.
A few other good tips are:
Yellow & white mums are most popular, but you’ll stretch your dollar more buy choosing the darker colors, such as a burgundy -the spent blooms are less noticeable.
Oops - the mum’s soil has dried out…don’t panic, try submerging it into a bucket of water, or make small holes in the soil with a pencil or stick & water from the top. These mini trenches will help the water seep down faster & water your mum on a more complete level than just trying to water it the old-fashioned way.
We take great pride in making sure our plants are well-cared for and are offered at the lowest prices in town, because enjoying Fall color shouldn’t have to break the bank! We love Mums & the seasonal sentiment that comes with it - by following these simple guidelines, you’ll be enjoying them right into the heart of the Fall season!
