•  Know what you’re looking for. Armyworms are 1 1/2 inch caterpillars that are pale green when first hatched but then change to olive green with a white stripe later in the season. They turn into moths that are gray-brown with a white dot on the wing.  It’s easiest to detect them on foliage in the early morning or late afternoon.

• Fall armyworms caterpillars will feed on almost all forage grasses and up to 100 additional plant species, as well as corn and cotton (bad news for farmers!).  Homeowners will typically see them in the lawn and veggie gardens (they looove tomatoes).

• Rake up fallen leaf debris to eliminate daytime hiding places for armyworms.  If you have a heavy infestation, look for droppings on the ground beneath your plants as well as brown patches in the yard where they are eating all of the green tissue off the grass – right down to the roots.

• Encourage hungry birds to visit your garden to help control armyworms by setting out feeders, birdbaths or nesting material in the area where the worms are feeding.

Build it and they will come

• Attract predatory wasps that will control armyworms by planting dill, fennel, coreopsis and brightly colored flowers near the armyworm-prone plants.

Drive 'em crazy with dill

• Treat Fall armyworms when they’re small – about half to 1 inch long.  Detecting infestations when caterpillars are small gives more time for control measures to be implemented.

• Spray Bacillus thuringiensis, an organic control for caterpillars, in the late afternoon or early evening hours when you see the first signs of armyworm damage in your garden. Bacillus thuringiensis (or Bt) is actually a bacteria and is safe to use around children and pets. There are also numerous chemical sprays available to control armyworms – we recommend Liquid Sevin, which you can attach right to the end of your hose for easy application.

•  Spray during the dormant season (winter) with a dormant-season oil spray to head off recurring infestations - armyworm eggs may overwinter in fallen debris. This is a good preventative measure.

FALL IS FOR PLANTING: Fall is the best season to plant just about anything.  Cooler air temperatures and warm soil encourages vigorous root development.  By the time that the next growing season rolls around, the plants you set out in the fall have had a chance to root in and become established.

Keep up regular lawn maintenance this month

• LAWN MAINTENANCE: Continue to mow, edge and water as needed.  The best time to mow is in the evening when the grass is dry and temperatures have cooled.

Enjoy the sounds of silence

• ORNAMENTAL GRASSES: These versatile plants provide four seasons of interest and are often at their best during the fall when their “plumes” appear.  They are durable, low maintenance plants and are rarely affected by insects or diseases.  Looks aren’t everything.  Not only do they add distinction to the landscape, they also add an aspect of motion and sound.  The gentle waving motion of the grasses, and the accompanying sounds create a peaceful atmosphere.

Remove spent blooms and be rewarded with more!

• CRAPE MYRTLES: Continue to remove spent flowers and you may be rewarded with repeat blooms before frost. 

The official taste of Fall

• COOL SEASON VEGETABLES: Sow seeds or set out bedding plants of broccoli, collards, kale, lettuce, mustard, spinach and turnips. 

Treat these beauties right and be rewarded

• ROSES: As summer’s heat decreases, roses begin to perk up.  Apply a water soluble fertilizer (20-20-20) to the plants and you should get a last hurrah of blooms before frost.

Fall mums offer a big 'wow' factor

• GARDEN MUMS:  Chrysanthemums should be available in mid September.  These colorful fall perennials can be enjoyed in containers or planted in the ground.

We all hate having to practically bathe ourselves in any sort of spray, oil or lotion to repel pests – nor should we have to.  Here are a few alternatives to warding off mosquitoes (& other flying insects):

Bonide’s Mosquito Beater

Mosquito Beater is an all-natural, non-toxic, biodegradable area mosquito repellent (5oz per 1,000 sq ft) which makes enjoying your lawn, patio & pool areas much easier without the threat of mosquitoes.   One application can last up to three weeks (effective one hour after applied) too – however, just like most products the weather conditions (rain, temperature and wind) may have a bearing on their effectiveness.

Mosquito Beater is quick and easy to apply – ready to use with no mixing and no water involved.  Simply broadcast the granules on the ground directly from the container, with a lawn spreader, dust gun or hand crank duster.  Best results are when applied in the evening when the air is at it’s most still – and the area will not be disturbed by people – allowing maximum effectiveness.

Bonide’s Mosquito Beater Fog

Talk about an effective fog to eliminate mosquitoes and their buddies!  Mosquito Beater Fog is great treatment against mosquitoes, flies, gnats, small flying moths, hornets and yellow jackets.  For use outdoors, stand 4-6ft away and simply aim the nozzle towards bushes and grass – give special attention to breeding areas such as garbage cans and compost piles (one man’s trash is another mosquitoes heaven!).

To treat indoors,  first make sure area is void of people and pets.  Next, close all doors and windows and direct the spray nozzle directly up in the center of the room (spray 5-10 seconds for the average room) with a slow sweeping motion.  Concentrate spraying areas where light is available (like windows) where insects are attracted.  After applying the fog, leave the room and close the door for 15 minutes – ventilate room thoroughly before entering to utilize.  Don’t forget to then sweep up any fallen insects.  This method will take care of mosquitoes, cluster flies, houseflies, fruit flies, gnats, wasps, hornets, bees, black flies, skipper flies, blow flies and small flying moths.

Want to nail the really creepy pests such as cockroaches, waterbugs, palmetto bugs, silverfish, firebrats, crickets, scorpions, spiders, millipedes, centipedes, sowbugs and pillbugs?  Simply spray the Mosquito Beater Fog into hiding places like cracks, crevices, behind sinks, cabinets, along baseboards/floors, around drains, and plumbing.  See one?  Go ahead and spray them on contact whenever possible. 

Oak Stump Farms Mosquito & Flying Insect Trap

This trap is a certified green product and is pesticide-free.  The trap is a simply, long-term population control system.  Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water and use an invisible pheromone marker to tag the best egg-laying sites so they can find their way back again.  This mosquito trap works as a breeding site that has the exact same egg-laying phermone that attracts female mosquitoes looking for a spot to lay eggs.  Mosquitoes and other flying insects can not escape from the trap and drown.

To get started, pick up one of the coordinating bait packs and follow the directions on the reverse side of the packaging to mix.  Simply add the bait mixture to the trap itself and rest assured that in a matter of days (& sometimes 1-2 weeks) the trap will be a huge success!

• DEAD-HEAD:  Continue to remove faded blooms on annuals such as geraniums, marigolds, petunias, salvia, verbena and zinnias.  Not doing so will cause the plants to stop blooming and produce seed which signals the end of the plant’s life cycle.
• REJUVENATE ANNUALS:  By this point in the summer, some annuals may have become spindly or leggy.  It is a good time to pinch or trim them back by as much as ½ their current height.  They will soon begin to leaf out, look thicker and start to bloom again.

Don’t get crazy - mow with care & precision

• MOW HIGHER:  Raise lawnmower blades by at least ½ inch.  Letting the grass grow taller during the summer months will cause the roots to grow deeper into the soil. You will also have to water less to keep the grass green. 
• LEAVE CLIPPINGS:  Leave grass clippings on your lawn.  As they deteriorate, they fertilize your turf. 
• MOW IN THE EVENING:  Mowing at this time of day puts less stress on your grass.  The grass is dry and temperatures are cooler.  
• EDGE TURF:  Keep your lawn edged so grasses like Bermuda don’t invade your planting sites.

Out with the old (blooms) and in with the new!

• CRAPE MYRTLES:  Remove spent flowers as they occur and you may be rewarded with a second crop of blooms.

Bagworm caterpillars can be destructive

• BAGWORMS:  Look for hungry bagworms on trees and evergreens. To control these caterpillars and prevent them from defoliating the plants, remove them by hand or spray with an appropriate insecticide.
• WATER WISELY:  Plants setting berries like pyracantha or hollies and plants setting flower buds for next year’s blooms, like azaleas and camellias will benefit from a little extra water.  Most established plants need about one inch of water per week to perform at their best.
• MULCH:  Make sure all planting areas have a two-inch layer of mulch.  Mulches help to regulate soil temperature, conserve moisture in the soil and prevent weed development.

  So this Fall, be unique, original, daring, but most importantly be COLORFUL!

Peace Lily:

Peace Lily’s are one of the most popular houseplants and are characterized by their long elongated green foliage with white half shaped blooms.  Thriving in lower lighted areas make this plant work almost anywhere. Try to keep it within 5 to 8 feet of a window for best results. Do not place your plant in direct sun. Direct sunlight can damage the Peace Lily’s foliage. If the leaves begin to yellow, it may mean it is receiving too much sunlight. Move it to a less lighted area.

The main care requirement for your Peace Lily is water. This plant requires heavy watering, but you must allow the soil to dry out in-between watering to a point as well. This houseplant will let you know when it needs water. The leaves will begin to droop. Allowing the foliage to droop slightly in-between watering has turned out to be successful for me. However, do not let it droop severely. Once the plant is watered the foliage will spring back up. If you allowed it to dry out too much, some of the lower leaves may yellow and need to be removed.

This plant also loves higher humidity levels, so providing it with a nice misting a couple times a week will help the plant remain beautifully healthy.

Please keep pets and children away from this plant. It is considered to be poisonous.

Chinese Evergreen:

Chinese Evergreens are durable, dramatic houseplants. They will adapt to a variety of settings within their limits. Chinese Evergreens are slow growing in nature, however when taken care of can last for decades, literally! This houseplant is characterized by large foliage in a variety of silver green and dark green colors as well as variegated. Chinese Evergreens & Peace Lily’s belong to the same family, thus the resemblance.

Chinese Evergreens prefer moderate to low light levels. They usually do not do well at all in direct sunlight, so beware. A north facing window is usually a safe area to place this houseplant in. This houseplant is also very, very, very touchy to drafts and cold temperatures. Keep temperatures above 60 degrees for best results. Dropping below 55 degrees can be lethal to them. If brown spots begin to appear on the foliage, it may be too cold for the plant.

Chinese Evergreens do best with moderate watering. Right in the middle! Don’t let the soil become soggy, but at the same time, do not allow the soil to dry out in-between watering. If the bottom leaves begin to yellow and fall off, chances are you are under watering the plant.

Overall, Chinese Evergreens are very nice houseplants to have. Fairly easy to grow, usually not susceptible to pests and is a long lasting variety allowing you to enjoy its beauty for many years to come.

Pothos:

Basic pothos care is very easy. These plants enjoy a wide range of environments. They do well in bright indirect light as well as low light and can be grown in dry soil or in vases of water. They will thrive in nutrient rich soil, but do almost as well in nutrient poor soil.

Pothos plants make a great addition to your bathroom or office because of the fact that they can tolerate low light. While pothos likes a wide variety of light conditions, they do not do well in direct sunlight.

If your pothos is highly variegated, particularly variegated with white, they may either not grow as well in low light or may lose their variegation if the light is too low. Only the green parts of the leaves can make energy for the plant so it must be able to get enough light for energy or its growth will slow or the leaves will compensate for the lack of light by becoming more green.

Pothos is very popular due to the fact that it can be grown in water or in dry soil. Cuttings can be taken from a mother plant and rooted in water and kept in water as a houseplant. On the other hand, pothos can also be started in soil and will tolerate moderate periods of dry soil with little effect to the plant. Oddly enough, cuttings started in one growing medium have a hard time switching to the other. So, a pothos plant started in soil has a hard time thriving if moved to water and a pothos cutting started in water will not do very well in soil, especially if it has spent a long period of time growing in water.

While pothos plants are an easy to care for houseplant, you do need to be aware that they are poisonous. Though rarely fatal, the plant can cause irritation and vomiting if ingested due to the fact that it contains calcium oxalates. Even the sap from the plant may cause highly sensitive people to break out in a rash. It is considered toxic to cats, dogs and children, but as mentioned, it normally will make them very sick but will not kill them.

Still Not Convinced to Get a Houseplant?

Most houseplants are generally very easy to care for requiring only the right amount/type of light and the attention of proper watering.   The benefits people receive from plants far outweight the benefits plants themselves receive…

So go ahead and treat yourself to a stress-reducing, productivity-boosting, pollutant-reducing houseplant….we won’t tell!

For Summer Showers…

So as you can see, we have SO much coming in during the hot summer days - stop by for a spell and visit us…we LOVE your company!

• Keep your lawn and garden adequately watered during the hot, dry summer months. Lawns need about an inch of water per week. Remember, a deep, thorough soaking is more beneficial than a light sprinkling.   

• Fertilize flower beds every 14-28 days.
• Cut back leggy annuals to encourage fuller plants and plenty of blooms. 
• Fertilize crape myrtles, butterfly bushes and hydrangeas with All Purpose Plant Food.  

• Watch for lacebugs, aphids and spider mites on flowers and shrubs. Use Triple Action to get rid of these pest.
•  Be sure that all tall annuals and perennials are securely staked so that they will remain upright during the afternoon thunderstorms that are so common at this time of year.
• Off with their heads! Remove dead blooms as they occur on crape myrtles and hydrangeas and you may be rewarded with a new flush of blooms.  
• Rejuvenate roses in July and August. Do not fertilize, but continue to spray for insects and diseases. Give the plants a light pruning in July to encourage new fall growth.

• Continue to pinch Chrysanthemums and Dahlias through the month of July.
•  Tomatoes are ripe for the picking. If blossom-end rot (brown blotches on the bottom of the tomato) strikes, sprinkle several cupfuls of lime around the base of each plant to increase calcium in the soil. Tomatoes that split on the vine are the result of inconsistent watering. Keep the soil uniformly moist throughout the planting season.  

• Set bird baths in a shaded spot to slow evaporation and keep the water temperature from becoming too hot.
